When you are close, the creatures go silent.
They stare at you still and tense, far from the other side of my skull.
When I am with you, they don't talk to me.
When I am with you, they don't command me.
With you near, their evil has no power over me.
They still whisper things to me while you lie next to me sleeping.
But I can't make out what they're saying, you cover it with your calm breathing.
Your heartbeat suppresses their singing.
I believe they can read your mind, just like everyone else's.
But they don't tell me your thoughts, even when you're away.
They are afraid. They fear you.
You are something so horrible, so vile and dire, that they are scared of you.
And you don't even know it.
